I am Artist-in-Residence at Salt Spring State Park, spending a year recording my impressions of how the park appears now, early in the 21st century. The residency will culminate in an exhibition of paintings at the Wheaton House in the Park in August/ September of 2004. In the meantime you can have a sneak peak here. I will add paintings as they are completed. The park land has been a source of inspiration to me since I was a young girl. I treasure the waterfalls, pastoral vistas, tiny wildflowers, stately sycamores and hemlocks, rushing brooks, shaded trails, and rural architecture. I have been spending time portraying those lovely areas as well as some of the overlooked corners of the park, hoping to draw attention to the beauty found there. Most of the works that I am in the process of creating are plein air pastel paintings done on location in the park. Some are studio watercolors made over the winter using my recollections, sketches, impressions and photos. There will be several opportunities during the year for painting with me and /or watching me demonstrate a whole painting. I hosted a "Paint Out" on May 22: eight other painters came and painted in the park on a drizzly Saturday. On June 19th I'll be giving a workshop called "Drawing from Nature" from 9-11 Saturday morning. Of course Salt Spring State Park is always available to artists and the public. If you see me sketching or painting there, please say hello. The paintings seen in this gallery will be available for purchase during the Exhibition in late summer 2004 at the Wheaton House in the Park. August 27 - September 12. Check here for hours. |
