I'm enjoying some "down" time...snowy walks with my husband & dogs, reading and looking at art. Paintings are being thought about, sketched, planned, absorbed. There will be some snowy landscapes showing up soon. I'll be travelling to Albuquerque with my daughter & 2 dogs for the month of February. I hope weather & time will allow some plein air painting in some seldom-visited and often sunny states along the way. I'll be posting to the 50 State Plein Air Painting Project, frozen fingers or not!
My paintings are staying at home on the walls of The Portal Institute & Orazio Salati GalleryII, both of which are open all winter!

June 27, 2009
After a delightful first two days of the summer art exhibit here at the studio, I am being reminded how many loyal, interested, art-loving fans I have and it has been so nice to see you and sell you a few more paintings. Isn't it wonderful how walls of true collectors never really get full? Where there is a love there is a way (to fit more art into one's life). There's been time to talk & share some drinks and catch up a little. I have posted some new work at the top of both galleries; here & here.

June 4, 2009
I've just blown in on a hot dry desert wind from Albuquerque where I attended the International Association of Pastel Societies biennial convention - always inspiring whether one is a beginner or at an advanced level of pastel painting.

Then it was over to the Texas Panhandle for a couple of days painting in Palo Duro Canyon, amongst wildflowers & birds.

This Friday night, June 5th, I'll be at Orazio Salati Gallery on State Street, Binghamton, NY with a bunch of my paintings and some other fine art and friendly artists from 6-9pm. First Friday in Binghamton is a big Art Event!

Saturday the 6th, I'll be painting in the fabulous perennial gardens at Gibbs in LeRaysville, PA....and showing off my flower garden prints...and tasting wine from the Grovedale Winery of Wyalusing. It's not supposed to rain..so come visit them & me, too.

Five new paintings are in the top row of both galleries; four here and one here.

October 26, 2008
Despite dire financial news and a serious downturn in the economy the 12th Annual Artists' Open House Weekend was not as poor as feared. We entertained hundreds of visitors out enjoying 3 (!!!) days of perfect fall weather and looking and purchasing art.
Afterwards I took 10 days of vacation and only painted two plein air paintings: one in Assateague, MD and one in upstate NY which I will post soon along with my two demo paintings from Monday October 13th. A dozen or so on-lookers watched those two paintings materialize.
Sincerest thanks to everyone who stopped by the studio over the Artists' Open House Weekend. It was often so busy I regret not being able to speak with everyone at length personally. I know you came to see the paintings. Thanks. I love sharing my work with appreciative viewers.

September 25, 2008
Last exhibits of the year at the bottom of the exhibitions page.

Two of my Fig Street Series plein air pastels will be shown in this exhibit. My work will be hanging at the Hope Horn Gallery, University of Scranton, although the exhibit includes Keystone College's Linder Gallery, AFA Gallery and Marywood University Galleries as well. The progressive reception starts on the 11th at 2pm at the Hope Horn Gallery.

I will miss the festivities because I will be here in the studio hosting visitors during the Artists' Open House Weekend. Both paintings were done on location in my daughter, Zoë's, Scranton backyard garden. It is a lively and colorful spot.

Artists' work was chosen from 25 counties;16 in Pennsylvania, 6 in New York and 3 in New Jersey. So I am very happy & honored to be included. The Hope Horn Gallery is a beautiful venue at the University of Scranton.

August 4, 2008
All of the artists & sculptors who created the 53 works chosen by the juror to be in the Endless Mountains Council of the Arts 12th Annual Regional Art Exhibition are winners and some of us won awards. My pastel painting "Ahead of the Storm" took second place and a nice cash prize. Thank you. You can see the whole exhibit at two venues in Tunkhannock, PA through September 28: Wyoming County Courthouse Gallery during weekday business hours and EMCA, 302 W. Tioga St , Fri, Sat, Sun 1 to 5pm. 570-836-EMCA

July 14, 2008
The Exhibit and Sale was a great success. If you want to see the last results and a bear story go to my blog. I'm off to Wisconsin & Minnesota for two weeks of driving and painting. I'll be one of the invited national artists to participate in the Door County Plein Air Festival. I'll be back in the studio by August 4. The Butternut Gallery in Montrose has some of my newest spring pastel paintings in 3" wide gold plein air frames. 570-278-4011

June 6, 2008
Autumn Mist, my pastel painting, won First Prize in Painting at Art in the Barn; a juried regional show in the Museum Barn at Hillside Farms, Shavertown, PA. I am pleased to be accepted into the show and delighted to win! The exhibit contains some very fine "barn-inspired" art, much of it on paper, so if you love quality watercolors this would be the place for you...only through June 15...and the show contains drawings, oils, etchings and sculpture, too....and it all stinks! Yes, there are cows nearby...it's a real farm!

May 1, 2008

April 9, 2008
I've been chosen to participate in the Wayne Plein Air Festival May 14 through 17...that's Wayne, PA. It's a lovely area outside of Philadelphia and I look forward to doing some spring blooms and stately architecture.

February 28, 2007
In a fit of nostalgia, while anticipating yet another Pennsylvania snow/ice event, I've put the Arizona paintings in their own gallery...go soak up some sun...not an icicle to be had.

I'm posting paintings as they are made on my blog. Check it out and let me know what you think. I'd especially like to know how to gain a little more graceful control over photo placement on the blog!!!

December 4, 2007
We enjoyed having many visitors and shoppers over the recent two weekends, but we still have plenty to choose from in paintings, prints and claywork. Our prices range from $8 to $1400 with plenty of good choices in the low ranges.

I'm looking ahead to 2008. I've finally joined the blogosphere. I'm replacing Painting of the Month with rodricatilley.blogspot.com. It is a place to show new paintings and talk about them and the process of making them. I welcome your comments.

November 16, 2007

October 9, 2007
The Artists' Open House Weekend, was again a great success. Many new and returning visitors to the studio...three days of unseasonably warm, but beautiful weather...a lot of fun and ART! My Monday demos went reasonably well; watercolor bouquetin the morning and an outdoor pastel in the afternoon. It is a joy for me to have an interested audience asking questions and engaging with me and the process. Such a fun weekend...and 18 paintings off to new homes. This will free up some wall space for me to fill over the next few months. Thanks to all who came.

September 30, 2007
Around the Barn opens today in Tunkhannock at EMCA. 2-5pm.

"Wolf Kahn is widely considered the premier landscape painter in America today. His chromatic renderings of barns, fields and trees are unmistakable. He works mainly in oil and pastel." The exhibit is called Around the Barn and is in Tunkhannock from October 5 through 28.

July 31, 2007
This Friday and Saturday (August 3rd & 4th-9amto 4pm) is big doin's in my hometown, Montrose, PA. It's Blueberry Festival!!! This is small town America at it's best. Stop by my studio on you way to or from the town square. July 17, 2007
I have posted 5 brand new pastels in the plein air gallery...all gardens.

July 10, 2007
A big thank you to everyone who came to the studio last week; browsers and purchasers alike. Fifteen paintings found new homes and all but six of the foxes took their boxes off to new dens.Thirteen plein air painters enjoyed spending time at their easels in the garden, so you'll be seeing their work soon in a show near you, perhaps.
If you would like to visit the studio just call (570-278-2479) or email (rtilley@rodricatilley.com) for an appointment. New garden paintings will be framed soon and I will have some of Zoë Poster's bud vases, slabs and sly foxes.

May 9, 2007
I am the featured painter this month at International Plein Air Painters!

April 29, 2007
Thirty days-Thirty paintings! As you know March weather in southern Arizona is *much* better than here. I spent every day outdoors painting! I'm back in my NE Pennsylvania studio now editing and making slight changes to my field work.

All the paintings are from Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties. I was based near Sonoita and anyone who is familiar with the grasslands in that area knows their beauty, even in winter. The new paintings include the locations of Empire Ranch (the original Red River was filmed there), San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, the emergence of spring cottonwood foliage, lots of blue skies, vast cloud formations, mountains in several ranges, a few cows...and very few cacti.

When you're painting out in public there's often someone stopping by to see what you're doing...at least these three didn't tell me what I "forgot to put in the painting".

I'll be showing some of these plein air paintings in July here at the studio. They will be posted to the plein air gallery as they are finished.

February 13, 2007
I have gone to the desert to paint. I'll be in touch when I get back....around April 10. In the meantime, the studio is closed. Email me if you like...it may take a few days for me to reply. The Butternut Gallery in Montrose is showing some of my latest work while I am gone. Give Tom or Betty a call for their hours...570-278-4011

February 3, 2007
Seven new paintings: December Cold Front, Winter Sunset, Friends, House in Town, Montrose Backyards, Sweeter Pastures and Silence - all pastels. (I have a few unphotographed small watercolors, too, but they are not posted on the website. You'll have to come over to see those.)

January 13, 2007
A new painting of the month, a new exhibition calendar for the new year. I have many, many things in mind to paint this year and January is my favorite month for being shut in the studio amidst my pastels, paints, and muses. Happy New Year and I hope to see you in 2007.

Rosalita and Laika keeping good company on the studio floor. January 2007

December 29, 2006
I thank everyone who visited my studio and/or website in 2006. You made my year successful. I tried to keep up; new paintings ran neck & neck with sales. So, not only did you make my year, but I've got plenty of painting time to look forward to in 2007. Good work, exciting ideas and a new year lying ahead are truly a blessing.

December 2, 2006

I am still reeling from the Artists' Open House Weekend. So many visitors (300+) to the studio, so many paintings (23) gone to new homes, so many perfect fall days (all 3)!

This is the afternoon plein air pastel demo that I did on Monday for a small crowd of visitors. It is almost finished here. Indian Summer. It is one in a stream of new work...nothing like bare walls to inspire my creativity.

Two new prints, too. Evening Graze and Polka Dot Pitcher. They are both large and sell for $95 ($20 shipping for up to 5 prints).

September 27, 2006
Six new paintings: Polka Dot Pitcher, I Fall to Pieces, Tamaracks, Pretty Morning, McAllister's Pride and Orange Dahlia.

July 17, 2006
I'm in the process of framing three new plein air paintings done in my garden this month: Summer Showers, Poppy Patch and Over the Hill...nothing old and wrinkled about it.

July1, 2006
The annual summer open studio is underway with a well attended reception last night. Cultivated Ground is the name of this year's exhibit of paintings and will be open every day from 10-6pm through and including July 9th. Yes, on the 4th also. Susquehanna County has been decared a Federal Disaster Area. Hallstead/Great Bend area is probably the most severely affected with many bridge and road washouts and closings all through our area and surrounding counties as well. Route 81 is open and the New Milford exit and 706 to the studio are all open. You can check here for detailed road closing info. Or call the studio 570-278-2479.

June 9, 2006
Finally got the new painting of the month posted here. Usually I pick a favorite painting for this spot, which is the case with this one. As I've said before, some paintings are easier to paint than others. It is a gift from the muse when it happens and I am always grateful.

This month I was over a week late posting because I was away at sheepherding camp with my dog, Rosalita. We were keeping company with a flock of Tunis sheep, plenty of border collies, an Australian Shepherd, a Wheaton Terrier and a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog some of which are turning up in my paintings on the easel. Look back!

May 21, 2006
Four new paintings. Look: Out Back, Morning on the Creek, Better Days, and Whitney's Barn. I am working on smallish watercolor spring bouquets, too. They won't all be photographed, but I will put a selected few up from time to time.

May 15, 2006
I won a prize!!!! Read all about it!

April 24, 2006
Two more new things; this time prints: Tunkhannock Viaduct at Nicholson and Wild Child Garden.

April 13, 2006
Two new watercolors: orchid botanicals. A pair of two pairs.

April 3, 2006
The new painting of the month is posted. After the big show in Binghamton, I've been re-arranging the paintings here in the studio. Call for an appoitment to see some of my new work. 570-278-2479

March 29, 2006
I've been to the southwest....Tucson, Nogales, etc. I thought I needed a vacation from painting. Here is a photo of me spending some meditative personal time with my sketchbook and my beloved desert. I came home with ideas for paintings, though.

March 11, 2006
April Fool's Day Reception at Orazio Salati Gallery 4-7 on Saturday, April 1st. No joke!

March 1, 2006
All 29 paintings are at Orazio Salati Gallery awaiting the opening on Binghamton's First Friday, March 3rd (6-9pm). Of course I've spent plenty of time looking at each of them as I was painting the past few months, but the excitement of seeing each and every one lit beautifully on the walls of this very nice gallery is building, and I anticipate a lovely evening sharing my work with others.

New painting of the month here.

February 23, 2006
Seven more new paintings framed and waiting by the door to be delivered to Orazio Salati Gallery tomorrow morning.

January 30, 2006
Three more new pastel paintings from the studio.

January 14, 2006
One new watercolor and five new pastels. All studio paintings.

January 2, 2006
A breath of summer air (and boy, do we need it here in Northeast Pennsylvania) can be found in the new year's first painting of the month. I'm presently at work on conjuring up some sunshine - also in short supply here. Best Wishes for your New Year.
